Personal reflection by Anisa Low

If I could describe my week at An Binh Elementary School in one word β Joy. Despite the 5am mornings and throngs of mosquitoes in the sweltering heat, I begun each day blessed with immense gratitude and joy. The hugs and laughter of the children alongside the quiet sense of peace of the Salesian Sisters were infectious and I felt immediately at home.
It was our privilege to conduct English lessons, exercises, arts and crafts and hygiene classes for the children who were always so attentive, participative, and eager to learn. I vividly remembered one lesson where we made cupcake paper butterflies and βflewβ around the classroom to a song on butterflies. Even the quieter children gradually opened and soon, the classroom reverberated with so much laughter. It was a fun sort of chaotic to say the least, but friendships were forged, and it rekindled the childlike spirit in all of us.
My very chaotic, fun and loving G2 class π
Every child is made in the image and likeness of God, each special in their own way. Through my interactions with the children, I caught glimpses of the very different personalities. However, what remained constant was the joy shinning twinkling in their eyes and their sincerity β always ready to call our names and run up with a tight hug or pen down little cards for us.
And not forgetting the Salesian Sisters who were always so cheerful and patient, who never failed to put our needs before their own. For tirelessly spoiling us with amazing food and ensuring that we are well-rested. Thank you for your hospitality and selflessness towards us as well as the children. Sisters, you have warmed my little heart in our conversations and small gestures, you are truly my role model and the embodiment of Mother Mary!
Finally, a huge shoutout to my fellow mission team for being so open, ever ready to help and for filling my first mission trip with even more joy and laughter. I am grateful to have met each of you (and perhaps gained a few more God mothers) and I look forward to coming back to An Binh again next year!
